Essay: My first time being robbed…

Have you ever been robbed in a foreign country? Most of the time, we hear stories from others or see them in movies. I never thought it would happen to me until my first visit to the United States. Even now, I find it difficult to accept the reality and I can’t understand why it happened to me.

Last September, my husband and I made the big decision to start a new life in the United States. We were filled with a mix of nervousness and excitement as we embarked on this journey. When we arrived at the U.S. airport, everything felt different—the air, the people, and my overall mood. After all, it was my first time experiencing an English-speaking environment without a tour guide.

Upon exiting the airport, our plan was to call an Uber to take us to our apartment. However, it turned out to be more complicated than we had anticipated. Being first-timers, we didn’t realize that we needed to take a bus to a specific location where Uber could pick us up. So, I asked my husband to wait while I sought assistance. Meanwhile, my husband grew increasingly concerned about my well-being, fearing that I might get lost or encounter problems.

While I was trying to find someone to help us, my husband was anxiously searching for me. After about 10 minutes, I returned, and I could see the worry etched on his face. Suddenly, I realized that something was amiss. “Where is my black bag?" I exclaimed. We had six bags initially, but now there were only five. We were shocked and didn’t know how to react. There was no one around to ask for assistance, and we were clueless about the whereabouts of our bag. It dawned on us that someone had stolen it while my husband was searching for me.

This experience taught us valuable lessons. Firstly, we realized the importance of better communication when making decisions. Leaving someone waiting for an extended period, especially in a foreign country, only leads to worry and anxiety. Secondly, we learned the need to be vigilant about our belongings at all times. You never know when someone might try to steal your possessions. Lastly, it’s advisable to carry fewer items with you and keep a close eye on them. No pain, no gain.

If I could change what happened during my first encounter with robbery, I would have packed fewer things for our trip to the U.S. I also wouldn’t have ventured out alone to seek help, leaving my husband to manage all six large suitcases. If we hadn’t been robbed, we would have had more money to plan for our new life. However, if it hadn’t happened, we wouldn’t have learned these lessons or known that even in difficult times, my husband would always be by my side, and my love for him would remain steadfast.
